The V system describes the method by which the film is held Peter. I you can imagine the film running over a flat surface the film would be scratched in time, however smooth the contact surface.
Editor viewers are designed such that the film is only touched by it's extreme edges, and the guides are like shallow Vs with the film lying across the top.

so tom, does this mean ALL super 8 editors will have this system? or can you still find some out there which have the dangerous flat-type arrangement?
what you say sounds so obvious, i assume no respectable make (elmo, goko, minette?) would use anything else?

You're right, and all projectors and editor viewers should have clearance designed into all the rollers and guides. Often the parts are made of plastic and I have at times used a scalpel to increase the clearance just to be on the safe side.

can someone - e.g. nigel? - comment on what makes the minette so special? the world seems to be divided into those who would use nothing else, and those who ONLY use other brands, and are more catholic in their taste.
i'm tempted by the elmo 912, as i understand the screen is larger and brighter than most.
tom, what do you use?
